Week 15 – Entry 1

This assignment is beneficial to a company so the customers can be updated on how the company is doing. In the vet tech field we use blogs to educate our clients to better the patient’s lives. They are used to inform people about common diseases we see in the area or procedures that are recommended. We would also use it to talk about common cases. I liked looking up other blog posts and reading them about what the vet clinics are doing. Reading other vet techs accounts of things in the vet tech field was very nice and helpful as to what their views on things are. Communicating between employees through a blog doesn’t make entire sense to me when it comes to a vet clinic, other than maybe policy changes or something simple like that. Also clinics are normally small enough you can usually send an email or call a meeting. For a big company it makes more sense to me.

Found it useful to update people on things going on in a certain field or informing them on what goes on in the field. I did find it hard to come up with things to write about since I am not in a clinic setting and just at school. I found it difficult to keep up on two entries a week because of that. I could probably do one a week or one every other week.

Week 14 – Entry 2

For Christmas break I am going to be going to my mom’s side annual Christmas party. It is thankfully the day after I come home from this semester. We usually go to my grandparent’s house for Christmas on my mom’s side, but we may have it at my mom’s house this year, depending on what my grandparents want to do. For my dad’s side we will more than likely have it at my aunt’s house that’s south of the cities. Otherwise over Christmas break I don’t have any other plans, which is nice, since that keeps my plans open and I will be able to do what I want and relax.

Week 14 – Entry 1

For Thanksgiving my mom, sister, and I went to my grandparent’s house and had a wonderful dinner there. My aunt, uncle, and cousin were there too. I love spending time with my family and we all have a great time with each other. Today I went to my dad’s girlfriend’s family’s house for dinner and it was nice, even though I only knew a few people there. I’ve never shopped on Black Friday since my parents have never gone or brought us, so I’ve never really gone. It kind of scares me since I know people can get crazy when they’re shopping.

This is an all too true reality when it comes to vet techs, we know the outcome of so many illnesses that when our own animals are faced with the illness it gets harder to help that animal or think clearly. They don’t let human doctors do huge procedures on their family, so why should us in the animal medical field work on our own animals. It is the same concept. The medical professional gets too emotional and can make the wrong choice or a different choice they would make if they didn’t know the person or animal. It can get difficult, but moving on is important. My teacher always told us “love your own animals, like everyone else’s” it helps you not get attached to any other animal other than your own. Yet, this doesn’t stop very many people. It is difficult to not get attached to people’s animals that you see regularly and basically see grow up.

Week 12 – Entry 1

I personally don’t hate pugs, but I will probably never own one or any brachycephalic dogs (smushed face dogs like French Bulldogs and English Bulldogs). They have so many genetic health issues that I would not want to deal with it. They are cute, but the way they breathe makes me sad. Sometimes they can have part of their throat covering their trachea and it causes them to not be able to breathe. They are just a dog waiting to die, unfortunately.

Their skulls are so small and smushed that their sinuses are pretty much nonexistent. Since their eyes are bulging pretty much all the time, they are very prone to getting injured and infected, sometimes leading to removing the eye. They’re always snorting, wheezing, and struggling to breathe. I don’t know how people can find an animal that is pretty much suffering cute. If you look past all of that, then yes, maybe, but knowing that it is more than likely suffering, is sad.

They aren’t only prone to eye and breathing problems, they can be grossly overweight too. They are very commonly obese since they get fed so much and they aren’t able to exercise, because they struggle to breathe. Their wrinkles are also prone to infections, because they are difficult to clean and they are always wet. Owners should clean their wrinkles as much as they can.

I just feel so bad for them since they didn’t ask to be that way.

Week 11 – Entry 2

I use the blackboard app on my phone a lot. I use it to check my grades, get announcements my teachers put on blackboard, and check what documents are on there. Blackboard app has everything the desktop version has, but is a little more confusing to use. It isn’t as easy to find things on there, especially when there are announcements and the grades. Either way, eventually I find it, but it’d be nice if it was easier to find. Otherwise, I like being able to look at my grades on my phone, since I can’t always be on my laptop. I also like looking at the announcements my teachers post, since they don’t always send them through email, so I don’t get them until I look on blackboard. Since it is an app, I can get a notification from the app when I get an announcement or a grade update, which is really nice.

Week 11 – Entry 1

I normally use Quizlet for studying for my classes. The classes I use it most for are Hematology and Pharmacology. Most of my other classes aren’t fit for flashcards, which is why I use Quizlet, so I don’t really use it for other classes. Once you type in the cards, then you can use that to study different ways, but if the class can’t be made in to flashcards it makes it difficult. I like that it is easy to use and very clear on how to use it. It definitely could have some improvements in allowing it to be used for more than things that can only be put into flashcards, but otherwise it’s a very helpful website/app. I very much enjoy using it for my classes. It’s like making flashcards, but online, which is nice so I can save money on cards and it is neater than my handwriting.

I like this article since it is good to see there are people like that still that are passionate about the profession they want to go into. I feel like that I am meant for this career, but my personality holds me back from being more forward and outgoing when it comes to this profession. If I can learn how to become more confident and outgoing in the profession I could get farther in my career. Hopefully some day I can develop into that person. I love when people are passionate about their careers since it usually shows when they are working. We usually get the question “Oh so are you going to become a vet?” when I mention I’m going to school to be a vet tech. They are commonly mixed up and people assume you go to school to become a vet tech, then a vet, but that is not true. It is common to have to explain to people what the difference is.

Week 10 – Entry 1

The NDSU Vet Tech Club participated in the Chahinkapa Zoo’s Zombie Paintball event over the weekend. It is exactly what it sounds like, half of us dressed up as zombies and got our make-up done so we could stand on the path and scare people. While the other half wore protective gear and got to be shot at with paintball guns. It was a very fun experience. Our group got to chase people and jump on a horse trailer while the guests were in the trailer. Most of the guests were scared. It was really fun.

Being an aquatic vet tech seems like a very cool option. I would be interested in specializing in this at some point. It would be very cool to be able to work with marine animals. There would definitely be many procedures that would be different since they have very different anatomy compared to land mammals. I think it’d be very cool to be able to work with them, because they are animals that us as students don’t work with very often. I’d have to do an internship at a facility that houses these animals, which wouldn’t be a problem.
